The Institute of Evolutionary Biology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher / Assistant Professor position in the NCN-funded SONATA project "How changes in meristem patterning drive evolutionary innovations: insights from syncephalia in the sunflower family (Asteraceae)”

Expected start: March 2027
Duration: 12 months, with the possibility of extension for an additional 12 months
Salary: approximately 8,700 PLN gross/month + 13th-month salary and seniority allowance

The project investigates the evolutionary-developmental mechanisms underlying the formation of syncephalia (“heads of heads”) in Asteraceae. We combine comparative genomics and developmental transcriptomics with morphological analyses, and in situ analyses of gene expression to understand how changes in meristem patterning generate evolutionary innovations and increased structural complexity in plants.
We are looking for a researcher with a PhD in biological sciences or a related discipline and experience in one or both of the following areas:
- plant evolutionary-developmental biology, including experience with techniques such as in situ hybridization, tissue culture optimization, plant regeneration and/or transformation;
and/or
- evolutionary research using comparative genomics and comparative transcriptomics of eukaryotes.
Candidates should have a good publication record, international research experience, very good command of English, and the ability to work independently. Experience supervising students and research mobility are additional assets.
The PhD must have been awarded in the year of employment or within the seven years preceding 1 January of the year of employment. If hired, the University of Warsaw must be the candidate’s primary place of employment.
