Research Position in Forest Genomics – Slovakia
The Institute of Forest Ecology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), Zvolen, Slovakia, is seeking a motivated researcher with expertise in genomics and genomic data analysis to join a research project investigating mature Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees that survived severe outbreaks of the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus).
The successful candidate will be involved in genomic analyses aimed at identifying genetic factors associated with tree survival and resistance, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and related analyses of genomic datasets.
An important component of the project is field research in mountain forests affected by bark beetle outbreaks. We are therefore looking for a researcher who combines strong analytical skills with a proactive attitude towards demanding fieldwork in mountainous terrain. Experience with sampling mature forest trees is highly desirable. Previous experience with sampling from the upper crowns of mature Norway spruce trees, including tree climbing or related techniques, would be a significant advantage.
Candidate profile
- PhD or equivalent research experience in genomics, population genetics, evolutionary genetics, bioinformatics, or a related field;
- demonstrated ability to analyse genomic datasets;
- experience with GWAS or related population-genomic approaches;
- willingness and physical ability to participate actively in fieldwork in demanding mountainous terrain;
- ability to work independently and proactively while contributing effectively to a collaborative research team;
- a cooperative approach to scientific writing and preparation of joint publications;
- willingness to actively and constructively respond to comments, suggestions and feedback from other team members during manuscript preparation and data analysis;
- willingness to contribute proactively to the development of analyses, interpretation of results and preparation of scientific outputs;
- experience with mature-tree sampling and particularly upper-canopy sampling is a strong advantage;
- experience in forest genetics, forest ecology, or research on conifers is advantageous but not essential.
