A postdoctoral position is available in the Shaw lab at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.  The Shaw lab engages in interdisciplinary studies centered on the origins of species, asking questions about behavior, evolution, genetics, ecology and phylogeny.  The postdoc will contribute to our NSF funded studies of the genetics of natural populations and artificial selection of mating songs and preferences in the Hawaiian cricket Laupala.  The primary role of the post doc is to engage in innovative research designs to analyze the role of linkage disequilibrium/genetic correlations of mate recognition behaviors in natural and artificially selected cricket populations, and their relationship to speciation.  Techniques to be employed include selection line analyses, genomic sequencing and associated bioinformatic and statistical analyses to answer questions about the population genetics of natural populations. It is expected that the postdoc will write up the results for publication in quality peer-reviewed scientific journals and will present the work at national and/or international research conferences. The successful candidate will enjoy a high degree of intellectual and day-to-day independence, enabling valuable interactions within the larger community of evolutionary biologists at Cornell.  The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in a relevant life sciences field, have experience in genomics and DNA sequencing and associated statistical and bioinformatic expertise.  Strong candidates will show independence, effective oral and written communication skills, and past mentorship experiences.  Continued professional training and postdoctoral mentoring will be supported.
